Uni Student Wins “Miss Australia”
April 10, 2008
New South Wales university student Katie Richardson has been crowned as this year’s Miss World Australia.
The 20-year-old was crowned on Wednesday night as Sydney’s Star Casino, and will represent Australia at the Miss World pageant set to take place in Ukraine in September.
“I just can’t wait to be able to use the title in order to carry out my charity work,” the University of Wollongong student said.
While pageants are often critcized for being about beauty alone, the organisers behind Miss World have said that charity plays a big part in the decision-making process, with contestants raising a whopping $2 million for their chosen charities last year alone.
“The judges will be looking for a young lady who will be an example to young people, not only in making the best of her physical attributes, but also her talent, for this is the ingredient on which she will rely on for her progress at the conclusion of her year at office,” the Miss World Australia website says.
