John Laws Hangs Up The Golden Microphone
November 29, 2007
Today marks the end John Laws’ radio career after 54 years.
Laws, 72 who has been broadcasting since 1953, said he was still unsure about retiring from radio.
“It was a difficult decision to make, and it may well have been unwise,” Laws said.
“It certainly wouldn’t be the first, and more than likely won’t be the last unwise thing I will do in my life,”
It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Laws, with one of the most controversial aspects of his career being the 1999 ‘Cash-for-comments’ scandal, where Laws and fellow broadcaster, Allan Jones had accepted money to provide preferential comment for products on air without disclosing their financial interest.
Aside from Jones and his arrangments, Laws is the highest paid radio presenter in Australia today, with commercial arrangements alone said to be worth over $1 million per year.
