Big Brother Gets a Shake-Up

In this year’s Big Brother, fans can expect a bit of fire to be injected into the usual ho-hum format, new hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O have said.

When the 14 new housemates enter the house on Monday night, Sandilands is certain that the new format will exceed their expectations - and ours.

“We need to shake it up a little bit but we don’t want to change the thread of why people like to watch this too much,” Sandilands said.

In it’s eighth year, this Big Brother promises to have re-invented itself like no other, and Ten hopes that a new format and new hosts will be just what the struggling reality series needs to reattain the public’s interest. One such change this time around appears to be less “dumb blonde-type” characters in the house, and more “real,” street-wise folk.

Sandilands explained: “It needs to be less ‘frat house’, more real suburban streets, so a few more real issues can come out. [In the past] there was romance and a little bit of drama but there were no really meaty issues being discussed in the house.”

The decision to axe serial host Gretel Killeen in favour of injecting the dual inferno of Sandilands and Jackie O was made in September of last year, a month before Killeen was told her time with the franchise had come to an end. However, despite taking over Killeen’s job, both Sandilands and Jackie O said they had the utmost respect for the novelist and television host.

“I’ve always admired her,” Jackie O said. “It’s a tough job. She sometimes let her emotions show but it’s a tough job and she handled it solo for seven years and she remained very calm under pressure.”

The latest season of Australian Big Brother starts on Network Ten on Monday, April 28.
